Most definitely was, hindsight just makes it seem like he was just that nigga which he was, but he still had hurdles because of him #1 being a nigga and #2 a lot of people looked at him as being that little boy from the Jackson 5 despite him being the standout in heartbreak hotel and playing opposite of Diana Ross in the wiz (where he met quincy jones). Nigga had a four albums before off the wall and thriller and really wasn't taken seriously until those two albums.
