Hated the first 3 full songs off the album on the first listen (don't hate them as much now but I still don't care for them and I still think they bring the quality of the album down). My thoughts on the album the night it dropped didn't include anything from Calling My Name because all I heard/commented on were the songs Drake had played on Table for One so far that day.

I went to bed, woke up in the morning, listened to the album in full and realized those songs were the only misses and I changed my take but leave it to a KTT2 nigga to always try to get a gotcha moment when it comes to me lmao.

That Drake hook is crack. But ofc it is - he’s doing classic Drake melodic work. Taking a classic moody yet romantic r&b chord progression (the IV-iii-VI-ii, ex What You Won’t Do For Love) and contrasting its darker tone against major melodic phrases - albeit with a movement that suggests its own darkness.

The pairing of the melodic phrases in “it’s okaaaay” and “okay to miiiiisss meeeee” is an effective one. The setup phrase establishes the scale with a simple tonic movement at a lower pitch, and the punchline phrase soars in its subdominant descent, giving us an emotional high (and not just any subdominant, but the fourth degree which is the most emotionally tense degree of a scale). Of course that resolves in the same tonic movement the setup phrase established

So we’ve got a whole emotional journey here with this simple ass refrain, helped immensely by the perfect pairing of lyrics. Brilliant

I've been saying he went 11/14 on the album since less than 24 hours after the album dropped lol. People are just upset that I didn't f*** with the first few songs and I had a visceral reaction to them.
