This and use this gospel could easily have had drum patterns added to the verses to make them more accessible/radio friendly. im sure there are iterations of the song with drums on them.

It seems he made a conscious decision to not have drums, and to not be a slave of the times. While in the short term it will definitely effect how playable these songs are on radio/clubs/playlists etc., they will age better due to them not perfectly fitting in with the soundscape of today
