My mom got a great teaching opportunity at the time.
A company over there was looking for experienced American/English educators and flew them all out. I was young so I went as well, along with others' children.
Stayed at the Intercontinental for the first month for free until our housing was set up.

Brazil’s capital city, Brasilia did almost the same and I bet it’s more of a contradiction of planned utopic cities. There’s a documentary on that subject too.
And some Soviet cities too.

The problem is being an oil rich state filled with tasteless schmucks with no sense for aesthetics or soul
And who believe in caste-like systems

What is the cost of “beauty”?
Pyramids needed a supply of cheap labour/slaves
So do the skyscrapers
It’s just how it is
We strive for grandness, but that comes at a cost.
The best buildings made in an ethical manner, really aren’t pretty, but maybe that’s ok.
As a society, we don’t celebrate such ethical endeavours tho. No one would know Dubai existed if it was ethical
(This is not a pro Dubai post, just thinking about society overall)
anyone into business or anything check this guy out
good content while munching on some s***
All these videos showed up in my home page too
Highlights of this video essay include:
Modern slavery (people working for extremely subpar wages/if any at all, some work only for exit visas without being paid for months) (Pay tends to be determined by ethnicity)
Horrible metropolitan design, lack of good public transportation
Worship of wealth taken to the extreme with no consideration to the working class at all.
Oppression of women and the poor.
The Burj Khalifa does not have a sewage system, so sewage trucks have to siphon it out instead of going to sewers
Environmental destruction from the Palm Islands to the coral reefs housed there.
……..sounds like the United States
People out in the boonies really got dubai in their heads like that?
Great city. Very fun to visit for a week or two. Wouldn't want to live there. Better than Paris at least.
