There’s just something immensely huggable about a progressive Pope…

Loved Ralph’s monologue about doubt. In 2024, American’s are in desperate need of doubt. A man who doesn’t doubt is a man beset by hubris.

The closing chapters were contrived on a few fronts. The twist presents Lawrence with something which challenges the very doubt he spoke of, but A. this feels like the writer showing his hand, and B. the film doesn’t leave him any time to wrestle with it. Still, if you treat this like a page flipping potboiler, it’s pretty electric. All the details of papacy procedure are delicious.

I feel like I need to watch it again to pick up on more things but I liked it. The twist btw was hinted at during that character’s blessing of the meal. Gave the nuns props and the smirk by Isabella

    That was so good

Who knew a movie about the succession of the pope would be this engaging. Hats off to the actors, director, and cinematographer

    Ralph Feinnes killed it

  • This was great

  • Searched this thread to see if some of my sentiments were shared..and they were lol

I liked Benitez coming out of left field and winning it. Lawrence would have been predictable, but all of the cardinals basically being sick of the bullshit and drama and being like “yeah f\*\*\* it, this Kabul guy is pure af” felt like a satisfying resolve to all the mess and greed and power-grabbing.

That being said..Benitez having a uterus felt too on the nose to the ideas of progressivism being pushed, and just felt like an unnecessary last minute twist.

The acting, dialogue, and cinematography were 10/10 all the way thru tho. I think I’d watch just about anything with Ralph as lead now.

It’s far from a bad film, very enjoyable and good. But it’s also pretty surface level and simple. But I think it’s accessibility has helped it more then hurt it this award season, it’s definitely the safe pick if it ends up winning Beat Picture.

  • Liked the movie gave it 4/5
This is one of the movies i dont even wanna bother debating it cause it just devolves into political arguments . Super engaging
