The gameplay preview really didn’t excite me.
What’s the reason for the souls series going open world?
What will it add to the gameplay?
Its the natural evolution of the genre and this series particularly. Being open world will take the concepts that made ds1 a classic like amazing level design, interconnectivity, nonlinear progression and vertical based game design to their extremes. Exploration has always been a staple in from's works and a free open world you can tackle in any way you want without guidance helps magnify this idea. Im surprised it took them this long to get to this point really but finally we're here

I'm not even particularly excited for the open world part. I just want more Souls.

I read somewhere DS2 was supposed to be fully open world but they had to make cutbacks in the development process. If I’m being honest I think the world design from DS1 is flawless, and Fromsoft games don’t inherently need to be an open world, but obviously I’m still down for it and based on that gameplay video it seems they’re incorporating a lot of good open world themed ideas into this one

Ds2 being open world would have hurt it even more. Its already pretty big and level design in that game is ass to me, and it stands out more since its sandwiched in between dark souls 1 and 3 (havent played bb yet) that have way better levels. Elden ring will be full of ds3 level areas like irithyll, ringed city and cathedral of the deep with dark souls 1 interconnectivity and a deep focus on a sekiro like verticality its already a masterpiece

I'm wary because I feel like the linear design of previous FromSoft games was a real strength, it was just open enough that it felt quasi-open world but there were rarely moments where it felt like an environment solely existed as a wasteland to travel on, everything had its place and purpose
That's why I'm glad about the dungeons and castles, they'll definitely have interesting designs but stuff like the camp of enemies protecting the treasure doesn't excite me too much, by making it so that you can attack it from all angles it lacks the precision that made even something like the pathway to the Tomb of Giants interesting
FromSoft have released nothing but bangers for a while now and I think the game will likely still be great, but I'm gonna hold off on buying it until reviews etc come in. There's almost no way it'll be bad, but I'm not sure FromSoft will be able to handle open-world as well as their previous stuff

If you've played botw i think you'd see it differently, but i can see where you're coming from. Imo giving players different ways to tackle a problem gives players a bigger feeling of accomplishment and of personal journey, because chances are different players will get to that chest in different ways, some easier (not so much probably its from) and some harder, but both fulfilling cause you came up with those ideas. Hell you could also choose to completely ignore that horde of enemies. This was one of the main mechanics in botw and i think it will work here too. This would be amazing for roleplay too, if you're a thief you're gonna play it safe to get to the chest, if you're a knight you gon slash them mfs, if you're an archer you're gonna kill them from up a hill etc. Maybe that's just me tho, i love to make my own story and find my own solutions so having these occasional challenges i can freely tackle in any way i want are welcomed. This is all really just an addendum, the traditional from levels are still here in the form of Legacy dungeons and smaller dungeons you can find anywhere in the world (another big plus to me), and the whole map will probably be filled with lore bits, interesting structures, npcs and cool weapons.

couldn't agree more.

Couldn’t imagine having this whack of an opinion
Some people gonna be streaming elden ring on saturday so i guess expect a lot of elden ring footage in 5 days

I've played and loved BOTW, and I definitely see parallels between the enemy camp and Bokoblins guarding treasure in ruins, but I just don't know if that style of world works well with Soulslike gameplay, again tho I'd be very happy to have all my worries be for nothing and the game handles it well, but I'm just not sure at the moment, I think if we had a 30 min gameplay extract without any editing it'd be easier to get an idea of what the game is actually like

A lot of journalists and youtubers already have access to a 72 hour network test build and we’ll probably be posting videos sometime after tomorrow I would bet. Bout to be a s*** ton of content coming this week
This game might be good but not looking like it has the magic of DS1/3 and Bloodborne

Yeah i know but that was a closed test, this will be streamed to us too. I guess on saturday embargo will lift

I trust from, im sure they'll come out with a game for the ages
60fps cap in 2021. 🙃
First world problems lol
Bloodborne still smooth as hell on my standard ps4 30 fps

Why
World looks amazing to me and the bosses look gasssss
Music also on point so far

Have you played on anything higher before?
I haven’t played Bloodborne because it’s 30fps. After playing at 144 for so long at this point 30 is way too jarring.

The fps is bad but the game is so good it’s not worth missing out on just because the fps is bad

It just doesn’t look interesting to me, missing the spark the other games had but there is definitely some franchise fatigue on my end to blame
Haven’t even gotten around to sekiro yet lol
