Of course they did, Eleanor Rigby is just a really solid short and sweet melodically beautiful little track. It’s didn’t need to be more experimental to function as well as it does.

Beatles are at their best when all four of them are heavily involved, they are pushing musical boundaries, and twisting song structure.

Rigby is a great song, its weak for a Beatles track though because its not what you look for in a Beatles song, any leading man of a band at the time could have made the song just as good. The melody isn't even built off the beatles, it's built off a string quartet.

Might as well be a Wings song.
