How would y’all feel about the idea of the banning of political parties in the US? Every politician had to run without a political party attached to their name, as George Washington originally called for.

Would that make thing better or worse?

  • That sounds completely counterintuitive. The whole process would have to take even longer, and you’re asking a population that has trouble engaging in politics as it is to more carefully study every single candidate to learn their unique platform. Congress would be an absolute s***show. Caucuses would be a mess.

Even if you eliminated parties party like groups would form.

You’d have massive coalitions of liberals and conservatives form which would basically be the same thing as parties

Because your local representative does not have their values distorted by party politics

you’ll never be able to eliminate special interests, your local city councilman may not be in a party anymore but he still has half the big businesses in his district putting money into his campaign fund

He also has the other city councilors he wants to keep on the good side of because they’re all in the same caucus

It'll never happen and it shouldn't. Instead, the DNC and GOP should each be divided in half, into 4 parties total (at least), with sides representing the more extremes of modern day conservatism and liberalism and the other sides representing a more middle ground type of thing for each, as that's where most of the country truly sits anyway. This should also force all of them to end up being truer to the ideals they claim to represent, instead of the current system where it's just 2 parties each claiming and falsely representing basic sentiments that almost any decent person would strive for; tradition and progress

I agree in principle, but I think we should let the parties realign naturally rather than just splitting them up. We just need a system where more than two parties can be viable. I think something as simple as ranked choice voting would fix this.

People should be able to run for office as a member of a third party without damaging any other candidates whose policy positions are close to their own.

India has multiple political parties and it’s as big of if not more of a mess.

Parties would exist even if they were nominally disallowed

I’ll do you one better. Have people vote on policies directly. Subvert the need for politicians.
