Window Seat is always gonna be one of my favorite songs ever. A comfort song for real
But then you got Gone Baby, Don't Be Long. And then you got Fall in Love (Your Funeral). You got Umm Hmm.
Shiiittttt, let me light a joint and cut this album on real quick.

1st album after a long ass hiatus and hearing her over that weird Sa-Ra type of production took folks that wasnt used to that for a loop. This was the 1st Badu joint you didnt hear Poyser’s keys all over the thang.
Her most experimental record for sure. Some highs like Healer, Soldier, and That Hump. Telephone still one of the greatest songs ever made and Me is her most personal record to date.
Pt. 2 kinda had a balance but it gets more love because she’s back in her bag

I prefer the first installment to the second, tbh.
"The Cell," "The Healer," "Honey," "My People," "Telephone," and "That Hump" are some of her most creative and arrestingly beautiful tunes ever.

Was Worldwide Underground well-received as a whole? I remember the Love of My Life joint with Common had some traction

Back In The Day still gets plays in the club and that never even got a video
Anything following Mama's Gun (legit one of the greatest albums ever made in the history of music) is gonna be seen as second rate.
Think folks f***ed with it, some critics hated on how "free-flowy/more jam-like" it felt like, but shiet after such an intense album, what other direction do you go?
Plus any album with I Want You is great lol.
Jon Caramanica from Rolling Stone was more critical and said apart from "Danger" and "Love of My Life Worldwide", most of the songs sounded aimless, "variations on some atmospheric theme ... slithering along unthreateningly"

like imagine listening to a song like this and then saying some s*** like that. This why music reviews never made sense to me lol.
I'm admittedly biased as a #NewDanger (folks hated that album lol) believer that grew up on s*** like this, I love it.
Like obviously older, I understand and get why people felt how they felt about Worldwide Underground. Crackers wanted a Mama's Gun 2 but my nigga she had writer's block after that album sessions + Love of My Life. Imagine after making an album like that you wanna lighten up the goddamn vibe.

Yeah, I'm making a direct comparison with New Amerykah pt1 and I'm now starting to realize how much of a left turn the latter was
Still, raw as hell.
This was my go-to jam

that whole Soulquarian crew was good for left turns man. You never knew what you was gonna get. That's why (even though, I understand and also don't really f***s with that album) I respect Common for Electric Circus.

"I Want You" is genuinely one of her best tunes of all time.

Badu the queen of long 8+ minute tracks.
