It's more than a pride thing. The club gets the initial compensation of the transfer fee. Then if the player ever gets transferred again, the initial club gets a % for developing the player.
Both instances means money that can get re-invested back into the club. So it can be used to upgrade the stadium, lower ticket prices (rare these days but happens in the lower leagues from time to time), buy another player, etc etc.
