When Grandpa Joe was younger he used to walk through a happy meadow full of vibrant and colorful flowers. Some smelled great and some smelled bad. But he one day realized the ones that smelled bad he seemed to like more. Realizing that Grandpa Joe seemed to like the smell he took a sample of said plants home...as he was cooking he accidentally burned the plant and got stoned for the first time. Hell he got the whole neighborhood high but he realized such activity could only be celebrated in moderation so every year on his birthday he would burn up the plant and the neighbors and friends joined it must of stuck cuz its 4/20 everyday you feel me ?

The tale I've heard was 4:20 was the last smoke sesh before parents came home from work for some kids in California who spread it through high school and it caught on
