It's artists like: Common, Talib Kweli, Lupe

NOT artists like: Cole, Drake, or Kendrick.

If anything these 3 are just great rappers all around, but to call them "conscious" shows your lack of knowledge of the genre.

Beats me bro. Probably when it started to get poppier and more mainstream if I had to guess.

But I can understand if you don’t like DOOM or Jay Elec or whatever, I get that doesn’t appeal to everyone. I personally listen to all rap: old and new, lyrical and not.

That's the point of the conscious discussion people miss. Eminem is not saying anything more meaningful than playboi carti. Rap like all music is very limited topic wise. It's all different ways to say I'm rich, I came from poor circumstance, I'm better than you.

At the end of the day music is music, music is meant to relate and make u feel something whether its to party and have fun or be sad/introspective. There is good lyrical rap and there is bad lyrical rap same with basic trap music, which means just because its lyrical doesn't mean its good music.

Truth of the matter is, that the VAST majority of people praising these lyrical rappers really don't get what the f*** they're saying until they have it spelled out for them or when some white critic or journalist writes an entire thesis on it.

This is why I mentioned Kendrick and said 'it's not necessarily his fault'. It's gotten to the point where his own fans have looked for things that aren't even there and he himself in interviews (iirc it was the Rolling Stone one) has spoken on how he basically has this 'wise sage' type of image when he's just a regular dude.
