I know a dozen or so would be down but it's the other dozen or more that I need to agree to go through with this thing

I have been contemplating, for about a day now, how to successfully do an all-time albums vote but always thought it impossible because: a) making an algorithm to properly balance votes is f***ing impossible for a 65+ year timespan
b) expecting people to rank albums from 60+ years apart is a chore and I don't want to do that to anyone.
I was in my bed last night after what seemed to be early signs of a migraine and I thought about how I could make it work.
A) Voting
i) ranking albums not necessary; just have everybody give a list of ~70-100 albums unranked; making it easier to add albums to your list without struggling to figure out where to rank it in a specific spot. Every vote is worth the same
ii) No due date so it doesn't feel like a chore. My least favourite part of the lists is reminding people for a list. I really like how lordie was super patient with the film lists and took a year to do it. I don't know if I can wait that long but the patience is admirable.
B) Counting & Results
i) not only would it be easier to make lists without actual ranks but counting would be infinitely easier. No algorithm, no adding s***, no pulling my hair out and counting everything twice to make sure I don't f*** up.
ii) With every vote counting the same it could really showcase our unique and varied group of people here. As opposed to the decade lists where 4 high votes finishes super high compared to 4 low votes. They would be worth the same (1 vote). RASIE said something about the true heart of our lists being the 50-150 range and I 100% agree. With this type of voting process, there will be golden nuggets spread throughout.
iii) I wouldn't have to worry about a rollout. I would very likely try to concoct a spreadsheet of sorts that you can view in 3 different modes (# of votes, artist name, year released). (I would likely remove all single vote albums, and either keep every album with 2+ or 3+ votes depending on the number of albums in total.)
Obviously this is just a rough draft in my head. I would need almost EVERYBODY agree to this and I know that is a tall task. The 2010s and 2000s lists were made possible because of the lockdown and everybody had a bit more time on their hands (not everybody has lists readily available like Aruji and I). Even though I know I said there wouldn't be an official due date I would still want to have the knowledge of whether or not it gets completed. Pretty much a pipe dream idea but these are things I think about after having migraine-like symptoms at 2 a.m.
I’m in!
@rise_zero @Aruji
Ok this metal
Pretty cool. Reminds me of some of the stuff Nile would do.
Swear to god this song on repeat >>>>>>

I followed that up with this one and discovered a new classic pairing on the way to work

“When you get home and you can finally be yourself/And you can not believe how you survived another day with that fake plastic version of yourself.”
@drjdeponytail yo this new band has some Promise Ring vibes
I've heard some things about I Love your Lifestyle, gonna have to properly check them out sometime. That track was nice

Isn't there a danger that you end up with so many albums, and with no structure, that it becomes undigestible and as a result almost meaningless?
I know you'll dislike this suggestion but it might work out better if people were really selective and tried to keep their number of contributions low (I'm not saying to have any cap, just encourage not to "pad"). I think you'd still get the "heart" of it because those are the albums that place highly on only a few lists.
Also, the idea of doing artists rather than (or in addition to) albums has an appeal. It's maybe better suited to taking an encompassing view of 60 odd years and it would probably provide a clear picture of the thread's taste.
Anyway, yes, I'll do whatever you decide.

that’s a really good point, the album cap would def have to be low

Like I said, just a thought, I may never end up going through with it.
Thanks for the suggestions. It could definitely get overwhelming for sure where the sheer amount of albums renders the results meaningless. The goal would be maybe 200-250 albums in the official results. Anything more would def be overkill
Having a low album cap is harder to do for an all time list. You're taking the difficulty of choosing a select amount of albums to pick from over 60+ years. There's been many times I've tried lowering the cap for DECADE lists and people complained about leaving a bunch of stuff off because if it. Take that issue and multiply it by 6 decades at once and I don't think 100 albums is a big cap at all. The results would be overbearing on face value but I would minimize the list at a certain vote threshold to make it more palatable.
