I read one of John Williams other books 'Stoner' about 6 months ago and loved it. It traces the life of a pretty ordinary, boring man and finds beauty and pain in the little details. Very different to Butcher's Crossing (and a lot less fun) but it's still essentially about a man trying to find himself and it's written in the same restrained but powerful prose. Definitely give that a go.
Then some other stuff I've enjoyed sorta recently:
Olga Tokarczuk - 'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead'. Cool little thriller about some mad vegetarian lady set in the Polish forest in winter, kinda reminded me of Fargo.
Graeme Macrae Burnet - 'His Bloody Project'. About a triple murder in the Scottish Highlands in the 1800s.
Gabriel Krauze - 'Who They Was'. He used to be involved in loads of gang s*** in London and this is like a semi-autobiographical novel about that life.
Toni Morrison - 'Beloved'. So f***ing good.
I had my eye on Stoner, glad to see it gets your approval, that Gabriel Krauze book looks p interesting too.
As for recs I really enjoyed Raymond Carver's work, had a convo with Very Based about him a month ago. Very minimal and written in layman's terms but with a real depth to everyday life.
I also reread one of my old favs BEE's classic American Psycho, this one is tried and true at this point but man I still find it hilarious. Way better than the movie.
And I think you would really like City of Thieves by David Benioff, like a WW2 dark comedy war drama. Really entertaining read.
these new Twin Shadow songs are so good holy s***

I should go back to some of his older ones. I remember trying Confess and just found it really bland so it put me off him forever.
But these new tracks like Alemania and Johnny & Jonie are f***in marvelous. Makes me wanna check some of the other albums before
