i dont have a fetish for "wankery" im just not allergic "impossible for kids to relate to it" i mean you gotta specify that you're talking about the cool kids here. we can't pretend that legions of kids didn't flock to Van Halen and 80s guitarists that followed in eddies wake. and regardless of the wankery aspect which I don't see as the main thing, obviously stuff like Kiss' massive popularity
im not a big van halen fan or anything but we cant act like eddie's wankery was impossible for legions of kids to worship

And Van Halen had a lot more fun in their lyrics then the prog bands overblown bullshit

And Van Halen had a lot more fun in their lyrics then the prog bands overblown bullshit
those bands/styles largely continued their popularity though they didnt just fall off immediately while every kid flocked to punk
pretty sure ELP just fell off hard and broke up. but Yes and Genesis experienced commercial peak after that (even tho they "sold out", they didnt just lose all their prog). and ofc Zep broke up but their influence still remained strong into 80s popular rock
you may not have meant van halen but you just said "wankery" which is super vague tbh cuz apparently it can describe both improvisational music and rigorously composed music. i dont think wankery is the right word
i feel like any music history narrative that is presented like "X killed Y" is oversimplified and just for the sake of a story. all music styles arise and fall, doesn't mean that one killed the other when they were at opposite ends of their cycle in the same year
definitely repeating stuff ive said itt at some point lol but whateveredit: peeped your edit, "fun" vs. serious is definitely a whole different topic also
