im not being elitist im just using the definition of actual punk rock music lol

i can name dozens of the standard universally agreed punk bands, im just not gonna pretend the definition applies to the Cars or Costello when they clearly do not have the characteristics of the music other than the fact that it's energetic rock that came out in the late 70s

You look up the list of punk bands on Wikipedia and at least a quarter of them have another sub genre they do as well

also the fact that "punk" is one of those labels where there are a lot of non-musical factors to describe it as a scene/category means that its devalued even further when you try to anachronistically apply to it to contemporary acts who were obviously not part of that movement itself

never said they are not distinct from each other, my point is just that this is clearly not a punk rock song and neither is Costello. both artists were "new wave' but also other genres of course (and Costello had a lot of variety beyond it)

i mean i think he was pretty much beyond the term after his first few albums but ive heavily always heard him associated with "new wave". more than vice versa if that makes sense, like I'm not trying to say that new wave would be the top way to describe him as an artist overall

also i took a history of rock class at community college like 6 years ago and he was one of the 5 or so acts the teacher mentioned and played when we got to New Wave

googling "punks poet laureate" just comes up with patti smith as results

Ngl now that I think about it, if s*** like The Go-Gos and Blondie is considered “new wave” then I could see how Elvis is too. I don’t agree at all but I at least understand.
