It’s just a betrayal of the material it’s supposed to be following up. I don’t want to get too political but it takes an angry Anarcho Communists work and makes it palatable for milquetoast liberals, which makes sense since David Lindelof is involved. It already feels “dated” in that it is very much a product of the Trump era. The social commentary in Watchmen the graphic novel has critiques that are so much more broad and universal despite being so of the 80’s on the surface. The show is also just flatly shot and stylistically bland. The opening sequence of the 2009 film alone has infinitely more cinematic value than anything in the show. My gripes are pretty specific so maybe you’ll like it despite them.

It’s a great miniseries that doesn’t completely understand the novel and makes a large amount of assumptions based on the source material like equating the threat of racism to nuclear war.

Chernobyl is essential

It’s deeper than that. Alan Moore would view both as a consequence of the system. Racism isn’t a focus of the book because it’s a natural feature of the world he’s portraying rather than a separate evil impulse that festers in people’s hearts. He doesn’t think you can correct it under that system, Lindelof does. Just the one panel of Dr. Manhattan stomping over Vietnamese people as a god working for the American empire says so much more about racism than whatever they thought they were doing with Hooded Justice in the show.

That was a little too challenging for me but I felt accomplished after finishing From Hell while cross referencing the appendix in the back the entire time 🧐 no way in f*** I'd have a clue what was going on otherwise s***s cryptic

It’s also just f***ing boring. There was a great show in there where Tim Nelson infiltrates a supremacist group but instead a bunch of white liberals did their s***tiest Atlanta the show impression.

I did enjoy Doomsday Clock though as a follow up in the comics. I think as a piece of meta commentary on the broader DC universe and comic history it was really interesting. Plus Gary Frank’s art is gorgeous.
