Yes apparently we had the most tactically successful landing out of all the allies on D-Day

My grandpa flew a Lancaster so he was giving the U-boats a real pranging along the coast. Also trained a s***load of allies how to fly.

Pretty sure my gramps was in the Air Force too (maybe) he died when I was 4 or 5 so I never really got to know him or hear stories. Think he was more of a munitions pilot though now that I slightly recall my dad telling me

My great-granddad was in the navy during WW2. Think he fought in the pacific but then he met my greatgrandmother in the Netherlands or something, so maybe both theaters. He was also one of the cooks on the ship. I remember he was always making crabs and seafood had all these gnarly sailor tats too.

I just recently found out my great grandfather on the other side of the family was a boilermaker in the depths of the Lusitania when it got torpedoed kind of found out from my extended family cause I'm not sure my close family even realizes how historical that was

Dude fought in WW1 as well, saw his mother get hanged. Not sure of the circumstances. Died at 104. Crazy life. Wish I got the chance to talk to him as an adult.

You better find out as much as you can from your parents and auntie's and uncles while you can I've been calling my auntie a lot more cause she's a tome and I'm realizing when she's gone I'm not going to be able to find out anything else about history of my family

To be fair he probably told them he doesn't want to talk about it. I had like an auxiliary pair of non-blood grandparents and gramps on that side liberated a couple countries from the Nazis but he definitely wasn't about to talk about it.

Yeah the guy was tough but I remember he was always drinking water and lived on rice and fish for the most part so his diet was clean. Just good genes I guess cause he did smoke too.

He definitely was that type yeah. But he also lost his wife like 10 years before I was born and everyone said that changed him forever. Probably just tired of life at that point.

I firmly believe that if you're a smoker and you don't get cancer up to a certain age, you have cheated the system and are good to go nuts on the cigs til you're 95.

My grandma recently passed at like 91, and while she no longer smoked at the end, she never got cancer despite smoking them well into her 70s and possibly early 80s.

I agree. It's just crazy genes. He outlived my grandfather by about 5 years who died of lung cancer from smoking and he was only in his 60s.

I suspect that older generation was raised on a much better quality of food than our parents and us as well. Probably made them hardier.

Reading about spies and when this guy was a young spy the Russian commanders wouldn't let him get proper treatment in new york for his sick son, who died as a result. His anger at that and disgust at the corruption of the Soviet elite made him immediately go turn double agent for the CIA and which he stayed for 25 f***ing years as he rose to the rank of general considered probably the greatest spy asset the states ever had, gets huge credit for the USSR dissolving and and for keeping the cold war from going hot. At a time when spies were getting like 7 million dollars for one crucial packet of spy intel this guy insisted on only receiving 3,000 dollars a year and wanted his payment in the form of power tools and fishing/hunting equipment got ratted out by a couple Americans spies who were doing it for strictly financial reasons and made fortunes
