Elrici feel like Zappa and Ray have some overlap in the way they would roast certain corny members of society in their social commentary and satire but zappa just never conjured a melody he didnt intentionally turn ugly in some way or another. at least on the 60s albums, been too long since i heard much 70s stuff.
yeah there is definitely a very distinct signature style that Zappa wrote melodies in. like you imagine everything being played on a marimba if that even makes sense
ik id never be able to convince you but i definitely think he peaked in the 70s, the 60s mothers stuff just the first chapter in the story

Well, like I said, if you're going to Zappa for feels then you're just listening to him wrong. There are so many artists that do the sad and happy and wonderful melodies. Zappa is a great counter to all that with his catchy bullshit imo
i dont turn to zappa for it but i do turn to anyone that id call my favourite for it. even george clinton would occasionally conjure a cataclysmic banger of a melody.

he dropped like ten 9+/10 albums in that decade for me. and ive always been drawn more towards a huge body of work with a slightly lower peak than having a tiny amount of peak music
hot rats the best of his 60s and probably overall but still probably landing in the top 5-10 range in that list

P-Funk also a perfect example of this
idk what my highest placing in the list was but they had one of the top discographies of the decade because almost no one could even come close to their best 10 albums of the period

its crazy how long they were able to dip into the well from the creative explosion they experienced in India
not just the white album but a bunch of abbey road and their early solo albums like to hear about burst of creativity like when Pixar team came up with a handful of their classic movies in one lunch meeting in '94 or Walt Disney collecting a bunch of old European fairy tale books when he travelled there in '35
