You still haven't listened to Janelle Monae debut
Not a fan?
Iirc there were cool parts but I only listened once

thought you'd like it instantly considering how expansively and impressively it borrows from 60s and 70s
Emergency & I really one of the best albums ever
Always liked Gyroscope, even when I was 17 first hearing the album, but now that I know so many girls who the lyrics describe perfectly, it's one of my favorite songs. Can't help but appreciate a song that's heartbreaking and fun at the same time.
Still never heard them. Name is too lame.

High tier singles band. The albums are average. They're going to be great live.

No exaggeration I think Change has some of the best lyrics ever

Noir is on it.
Here's a few deeper cuts I like.

I think their image, what matty healy says and does publicly, and their fanbase of teen girls does them no favors in the eyes of "serious" listeners.
But for me, Healy is probably the single most astute pop singer of the last 10 years in speaking to our times. His commentary on the internet, mental health, social media, intersectionalism, etc. (Air quotes "the zeitgeist") is funny, smart and meaningful IMO. I can't really think of someone who puts what it felt like to live in the west as a young person in the 2010s into words quite like him. He drips with irony and I just love it.
And then musically, their records always have really great production imo. They have a lot of..not experimental, but interesting IDM sounding influence on a lot of songs. They always have interesting synth sounds, and they'll often sound (purposefuly) like other bands, be it Joy Division, Smiths, Duran Duran or whoever. (As matty says -"she said my references were spot on")
They wear the big room 80s pop influence on their sleeves and those are a lot of their best songs. But they branched into jangle pop in the last 2 albums and the last one was produced by Jack antonoff and had a lot more of an a***og sound. They make long records that branch out in many different directions but still have a unified sound. I don't like every song on the albums but I find them deeply rewarding to get lost in.
My favorites of theirs are probably "if you're too shy let me know" (posted above) and this -

I like my men like I like my coffee - full of soy milk and so sweet it won't offend anybody

Yea its an all time classic I love it
I see a lot of Bryan ferry in healy. Like if ferry was born in 1990. Instead of basing his whole thing off Dino and Elvis, Matty looks to Le Bon, George Michael, Moz. But the way they sing about women, to women, and the funny little flourishes of language that speak directly to their generation. Men of their times both.
