    Alan and Jonylah Forever @Aruji

wish Drogas Wave was a bit more focused and streamlined cause I think it would be close to T&Y if it were a few songs shorter

def agreed. album could be really strong but it's bloated for no reason.

Still listening to that new Sufjan. I think My Red Little Fox is my favorite song on the record. Every time the choir comes in I get intense chills and a little weepy. Just sublime stuff.

Also feel like the concept remains strong in the first half and kinda becomes non-existent for much of the second half. Lupe still kills it on every track but they're not all essential

feel the same. Lupe had that tendency to be overly ambitious. Especially since T&Y was a successful comeback.

Alan and Jonylah Forever two of his very best songs tho.

I really liked Drill Music in Zion because it was so concise albeit a bit rushed in places

There’s some tracks on there that gave me a certain feeling I haven’t gotten from hip-hop in a long time. Like when someone’s just riding a wave so effortlessly. It’s hard to put into words what I mean.

Lupe makes it so effortless. He's become one of my 10 favorite hip hop artists (maybe 5) and would probably be my pick if forced to choose the best rapper ever

  • Nobody else is doing it like this, man

    "Wade with us
Baptize and convert to the waves with us
I tuned in to what the future holds
I could never be a slave, niggas
They gon' have to pay me, Navy
Downloaded by the tidals like Jay-Z
That's a roll offshore like an A.P., Davy
Jones' locker on top of those hoppers off the side of the ship
Suicide, didn't die from the dip
Submarine man, keep your eyes on the blips"

I think I gasped the first time I heard these bars

“Man does not become superior 'cause you connect him to a cape
Nor does become inferior because you connect him to a ape
I never wanted my life to be a collection of some dates
And holiday my days away and intellectually sedate
It's not really a beef but conceptually it's steak
Like do genitals and gender roles successfully conflate?
The current art world is just competitively opaque
It never ceases to amaze, my mouth is medically agape
One day its raising up the brand, the next it's shredding it to flakes”

Watched this really interesting video on the history of emo and it was great informative stuff until they get to the point where Brand New comes up and they argue “it’s impossible to separate the art from the artist in this case”. Like ugh okay—I guess you can’t listen to any 70’s rock band either. They all sung about girls and slept with underage fans.

so weird how nitpicky people tend to be about that stuff. what makes what Jesse Lacey was doing any harder to separate from the music than any other problematic artist from theirs? i don’t think they’d be able to come with a coherent answer

I generally always separate the art from the artist. with that being said, Brand New got way too many good songs for me to just ignore/forget about em lmao

but wait Brand New also isn’t very emo at all, or maybe my definition of emo is too rooted in the Midwest emo scene, idk. a lot of their music is pop punk or alt rock imo

It mostly bugged me cause the format for the video was just a linear informative look at the history of the genre and which artists influenced the different waves of it, but it’s not until that Brand New part that they change their tone and start becoming hyper opinionated. It’s one thing to mention what he did, but it’s very weird to stop the flow of the video to essentially condemn certain art and the audience for taking it in.

But yeah Brand New are definitely in the emo ballpark. They’re certainly hugely influential to it in that period of time. Same way Weezer’s Pinkerton is a cited influence by a lot of emo bands. It’s a pretty comprehensive and well researched video.
