Well thankfully you’re in the minority on not totally feeling Armed Forces. At least I don’t feel crazy for liking it the most lol. I will marinate more on This Years Model. Been a bit since I’ve gone back to it.
I don't really think it has anything to do with why it's my favorite Costello but my dad and I did an epic road trip when I was 18 or something and he brought This Year's Model, Purple Rain and Buddy's Holly's greatest hits
We were in his '67 Stingray that had a ridiculous system in it good times
that was pretty clever, i actually had to google bleat cause I never heard that word before
I was raised on a farm lol i know the sound well

Pivotal moment for me getting into funk, rockabilly and whatever you call Costello tbh

Gonna go listen to This Years Model right now. Then I’m gonna check out Nick Lowe’s Jesus of Cool. Should be fun back to back.

I'll check out that Nick today too
busy until after the holiday this weekend. tbh we have very different music tastes so I'd have to give it some thought. maybe i'll curate a playlist for you
Not that different
U know how drake said "Know that I don't make music for dudes who don't get p****"
Well costello DOES make music for those dudes lol

I mean I like This Years Model a lot. It’s just individual songs don’t stand out to me nearly as much. When I think Elvis Costello it’s Armed Forces that comes to mind first.
I'm more of a My Aim Is True kind of guy because I love that 70s pub rock sound. This Year's Model is probably his tightest album though.
I also really dig the caffeinated sprawl of Get Happy. So much fun.
@Bizzle i think i finally cracked Census Designated after 6 full listens, it’s her best album imo
first off the lyrics are on a completely different level of maturity and abstraction which is awesome. the sound is so dreamy and consistent that it makes for one of the most cohesive listens i’ve ever heard, even without gimmicky song transitions. and her voice is amazing on here, showing a surprising amount of control over her newer, higher register.
i had a lot of trouble telling the tracks apart at first, but they’ve all got pretty distinct melodies and lyrics if you pay attention. i think my favs other than the singles are Backseat Girl and Idling Somewhere. Always Have Always Will and Video are right there with em too.
@drjdeponytail how tf are some reviews saying Shannon’s voice is cooked on the new absib???
i’ve just been thinking how much better she sounds lmao
