    @Koala
    Sounds like he has a bit of Leonard Cohen in him. Always thought this was such a weird/surreal pop song to become an actual hit. The Nancy Sinatra parts are almost a bit Nico-esque. like, wth do the lyrics of this song mean lol

    Hazelwood himself has said he was f***ed up on d**** and didn't think it had much meaning

    Personally I interpret it as a story of trying to move on from a very impactful/painful relationship. When he sobers up, he'll come thru and tell you about this girl who changed his life and ultimately f***ed it up. I guess he's talking to someone he wants to move on with, because the gate metaphor strikes me as sexual.

    Then we get the verses from the girl (Phaedra)'s perspective, which describe her and women like her as something to learn from but ultimately not get too close to.

    All I know is Phaedra is a character in Greek Mythology or something. Cool weird little tune though. Love how the duet switching from Hazlewood to Sinatra is kind of jarring but also affecting. especially at the end there. Even Hazlewood on the horse in the sand kind of reminds me of Nico

    Also i've read different, that he specifically said he wasn't on d**** when he wrote the song

    I'm just gonna guess that the dude had a meaning in mind when he wrote it but just forgot it and instead of trying to remember he just told people it doesn't mean anything.

    pretty much the exact opposite of Paul McCartney trying to pretend like he wrote Blackbird about a young black woman during the civil rights era

    why do all the sheet music's and synthesias for great piano songs have the melody in them and not just the backing track? Trying to learn the piano part not the f***ing melody built into it...

    Wouldn't you have to know somebody's education and background to know if they were being pretentious? Nico of the dang Velvet Underground of all things can probably pull it off since they're the ones that invented the rock&roll song-as-art-exhibit. She was in a Fellini opus way back in the 50s so I think she probably spent enough time in the art world.

    I remember being super into Nico’s music. I used to have a few of her albums on vinyl too

    Yeah I don't mind "pretentious"-ness in things if it ends up being cool

  • Dec 17, 2023

    Been watching some Miami Vice. Best show. It can make any song they use seem so cool.
