I’m a bit mixed on the new The Smile record. Some of it veers closer to post rock at points. The meme of Thom moaning vague nonsense is actually kind of true here. There’s not many of his beautiful melodies. It’s a lot of singing as an instrument. The playing tho is fantastic and the atmosphere is strong. Under Our Pillows is probably my favorite off of it. It sounds almost like something Can would have done.

It’s not fair to compare this to a full Radiohead release, but I think it’s a little too understated and driven by “vibe” to be even as good as the first The Smile record. This one is more focused and consistent but there’s definitely higher highs and more variety on the last one. The official Radiohead thread is blowing this album so I’m not even going to bother sharing this opinion in there. Curious what y’all thought?

Bending Hectic is good and Teleharmonic, Read My Lips and Under Our Pillows have nice ideas but pretty much every song (aside from Bending Hectic, which is imo their best song overall thus far) feels inconclusive/sketchy.

Even then, Bending Hectic sounds Like Tim and Jeff Buckley teamed up to rerecord Like Spinning Plates. I like it a lot tho
