Finally checked out Danny Brown’s album from last year. It was definitely solid overall and the track with MIKE was a highlight. I found the existential themes across the project to be pretty interesting. Although I feel as if rap since about 2018 has felt so inconsequential. So much of what peaks my interest in the genre on the surface—rarely comes across like fully fleshed out songs anymore when I get around to them. This could be a me issue. Maybe it’s production styles becoming more sparse and built on mood or it’s a shift away from verse/chorus/verse structure. I’m not sure what it is, but I’m just not connecting as strongly with a lot of it anymore.

He’s this like forgotten mid to late 70’s singer/songwriter who kinda has like a Big Star and Nick Drake thing going on—in terms of being unsuccessful at the time, but who’s sound resonates more now despite being a strong distilled representation of what was going on around them.
