The Torture Garden by Octave Mirbeau is another one I still haven't finished but has pretty similar themes. It's about a French guy who travels to China and finds an underground society "a garden in China where torture is practiced as an art form - a dissolute Frenchman discovers the true depths of degradation beyond his prior bourgeois imaginings."

Written in 1899 too... Nothing compared to Marquis De Sade however who I don't ever plan on reading.

I think that film Martyrs is also about this subject. Cronenberg too maybe. I should note however I'm skeptical/don't really believe in the idea of transfiguration/transcendence through torture/suffering, but I find the topic really intriguing.
