Kanye a bit of a unique case on account of the head injury and bipolar disorder. Apparently it can cause a mental break for 6 months to a year and s***. My kneejerk reaction was like yours and I took all the edge at face value but it doesn't even take some mental gymnastics to see that he's also trying to "be reflective" when you sit with the music for a bit. He's definitely still in the sunken place but there's some glimmers of light there. Don't blame anybody for tuning him out but let us live.
