We actually overlap the most in some ways

We probably do since RVI goes off on so many weird jam band, zappa, jazz and Latin tangents that you and I don't

Yeah that’s the most frustrating part about his criticism. Almost every possible combination of sounds has been done. He’s speaking about them as if they’re either unconscious of what they’re doing or trying to get away with stealing. I think there’s room in modern music—when we’re half a century removed from the sounds they’re pulling from—to try and distill the essence at the heart of that older work and bring more of it into the world. Those styles are arguably as alien to younger people now as any possible new avant garde music that could be made in the moment.

Scaruffi washed. He's way behind in general and his format and rating system doesn't translate at all anymore. Treat 7's as 8's and 8's as 9's or just ignore the ratings completely. I'd only check out his recs of stuff that you've never heard of before because he occasionally recommends some interesting stuff. His 60s-90s glossary is still his most essential for good recs. He's been steadily declining since and is almost useless now

Also you shouldn't go into a Lemon Twigs scaruffi review expecting good s***. Since he doesn't really care about quality at all, he's 'trying' to be objective about the innovation, but like drj said, being innovative is harder and harder every day. Lotta his 8/10 ratings over the last decade is unlistenable experimental trash but it's "innovative" so it gets a high score

@Aruji i just found out the 'Fourth member' of Pandora's Box (Deliria Wilde) was a make believe person (by Steinman). i always wondered why she didn't have any lead vocals herself and only backup on one song

This is a very fair assessment. I also agree that he’s great for discovering stuff. I’ll always respect the guy for introducing me to Robert Wyatt and Lisa Germano. I rarely actually check his site, but a buddy of mine knew I was familiar with him and a fan of that band—so he linked me his ratings. Amusing but a little frustrating as I said.

I’ve been really digging Todd Rundgren’s more playful experimental stuff, but it’s always nice how he sneaks in a few perfect pop songs that shake things up or act as catharsis.

Nah every 8 deserves to be listened to (even though I'm personally not particularly fond of Maintes Fois. That one's a bit boring and clicheed tbh). Like Toby Driver, dreamcrusher, Endon, To live and Shave in LA, the Books, Sadaf, F***ed Up, Pragmatic Quartet etc.. Sure, He has developed that noise affinity but the music is far from unlistenable imo. He has always praised albums like this. I just like him praising albums that attempt to broaden the musical language.

You can tell alot about a person by asking who their favorite band of the 90s is as y'all probably know mine is Pulp.

    I suspect y'all got;

    Rise - Oasis maybe Pumpkins
    Fella, Lordie - Radiohead
Koala, Raise, Galaxy - Red House Painters
    Eric, Gordon - AIC
    Ponytail - Dino Jr
    RVI - XTC or something
Bizzle, VB - American Football or BTS or something

lmaooooo this post so off but maybe you were messing around lol. don't actually like BTS and you're almost 20 years off from when they started. I do like American Football but not outside of their eponymous album.

My favorite 90s bands are MBV, Unwound, Swans, also Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds imo were producing a lot of their best stuff in the 90s. If AIC released more music in the 90s they could be up there.

It would be much easier to get at my music taste if I could list solo artists from the 90s.

Yeah I concur Bob is the goat I have like 15 years of listening to him before i dove into Tom and Nick so maybe they'll catch up one day. Either way Bob paved the way for them.

I love Heart Of Gold lol but yeah it might not even make my top 40 Neil songs.

See if I knew that I could have been tutoring you on The Kinks this whole time I'll make you a playlist of the deep cuts and less overplayed highlights

yeah I've said this before but I do consider what Bob Dylan did for popular music similar to what Beethoven did for classical. Though bob is no Beethoven.

I've gotten into 5+ bar fights and I can tell you it doesn't make you a badass. Actually nowadays at 28 I just feel shame over most of them. (some of them were very warranted tho or just self defense)

You would dig some of their songs broski, they definitely got a groove and for an alt/indie band had some really nice musicianship and lyrics.

these songs from this album will always have a place in my top 100-200 songs list. The way they switch constantly from energetic anger to soft balladry... Cowboy Dan is the saddest song I've ever heard. Totally captures the indignation and then the sadness of the dying west that's been raped by modernization. A lot of people saying the song is from the point of view of a Native American. Idk bout that tbh.... but I guess it could go both ways.

and Teeth like God's Shoeshine is somehow even better. That moment at 5:16 holy s***
