I don't think you necessary have to "get" it so much as enjoy the ride and allusions to Greek mythology, maritime folklore, and The Shining etc. but yeah it's a polarizing one. My dad hated it and a friends friend that saw it with us wasn't much of a weird movie watcher and literally yelled "THAT WAS THE WORST MOVIE IVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE" as soon as it ended
the rest of us were laughing the whole time. Classic comedy for me.
the atmosphere and pure visuals of it were always cool
it was satisfying when pattinson's character had the same reaction to the nonstop old sailor prose as i was starting to have
also contributing to me increasingly thinking i dont really understand what horror movies really are cuz i didnt realize it is one
Were ye not fond of me lobster
yeah i can see it hitting harder on re watch, this part didnt make me laugh during movie but it made me laugh reading this post

HARK!
yeah it's just as much comedy as horror and art film. stupendous. That monologue is Shakespearean, as @twinkletoez said.

Eggers has said that, even more than cinema, his real passions are mythology and language. So checking out some to the things I mentioned would inform your opinion more than turbo dust in this case. Shining ain't dusty and I can't think of many other films that would prepare you for Lighthouse. Eraserhead maybe.

More “Shakespearean” in spirit than the MacBeth movie Joel just did imo

Because he scrunched the screen size a gimmicky aspect ratio.. but it kinda works to build a claustrophobic feeling.

I mean they're cool, not sure how I would feel about them going back if I didn't grow up on them. If you wanted to see some actually masterful spy s*** from that era I would recommend terrifying mega opus The Manchurian Candidate.

I really need to give it a proper rewatch
