@Fella @Elric what are your top Britpop albums oat that arent the ones by the normal heavy hitter bands

It’s funny you ask, cause I’ve been kinda going back through a lot of that recently. I tend to widen the range of years that constitutes it. I start with 1989 and end at 2001.
    The Auteurs - New Wave
    Teenage Fanclub - Grand Prix
    XTC - Nonsuch
    Gene - Olympian
    Lush - Lovelife
The Beautiful South - Welcome to the Beautiful South
    Travis - The Man Who

I need to relisten to a lot more of The Divine Comedy, but I remember really connecting with them back in the day.

I’m praying for her man. I’m so sorry to hear that. I really hope she ends up alright. You don’t deserve to see that and she doesn’t deserve to go through it.

what does britpop mean to you

Anglocentric lyrics and style rooted in quintesentially british pop stylings (glam, swinging london, beatles, bowie, small faces, kinks etc.) - goodbye teenage fanclub which sound like the byrds and big star
Massively popular in england across class divides (tho mainly white) - goodbye xtc
    Americans did not get it
    Riffs and hooks
Lyrics about drinking and s***and partying with a kitchen sink realism style

Every major streaming service has Britpop playlists that includes almost all of those artists. Britpop is just the 4th wave of British pop/rock music. It’s a distillation of 60’s British Invasion bands, 70’s glam, and 80’s alternative. It’s as much an extension of the jangle revival and indie pop of the 80’s (Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, etc) as any of that. Even Paul Weller’s solo stuff in the 90’s is classified as Britpop. XTC is constantly mentioned in discussions about the origins of that “sound”, so why wouldn’t their post Skylarking output fit the bill.

He’s out of his mind at this point to say that they don’t count lol. They’ve always counted. That isn’t even stretching the definition, that’s just been an established band in the wave.

I guess Britpop is just 6 bands from 1993 to 1997. What a stupid useless term then.

I cant think of one rn but neil hannon is from northern island and divine comedy i would say is britpop. It needs to be something that cannot have been made anywhere but the british isles. Like the jam, or the small faces, or spledgenousabounds (these are not britpop but major britpop influences. Its almost an attitude thing more than musical.

Like reef sound like a band from california, ash could be an american power pop band etc.

Elastica blur suede oasis divine comedy 90s paul weller supergrass pulp verve boo radleys cast divine comedy

So yea ur right not a ton, its kinda arbitrary i guess but if ur shoegaze, baggy, after the 90s or before 92 u cant really be britpop it was a time as well as a genre its not like thrash metal where someone could make it tomorrow...
