It doesn’t even come close to reaching masterpiece territory for me, cause that rough bluesy style just isn’t my speed generally. Still, it’s a very good example of it, and there’s enough diversity outside of that sound to make it a success. Trout Mask Replica just goes off the deep end in a more fun and fascinating way. If a musician is not interested in focused, satisfying song structures, compelling melodies, or beautiful textures, then I’d rather they surprise me with something amusingly bizarre or uncomfortable. The debut is still too normal, and not the type of normalcy I’m drawn to.
