i enjoy other parts of the game besides the goals but i understand people not too into the sport not seeing what parts are supposed to be exciting besides goals. i enjoyed watching Spain play good football even tho argentina did poorly and are a dirty team

I went to the Spain vs Belgium game and it was amazing in person i will always be able to say I say the world cup champions play

Yea that's what some of the guys I work with who are into the sport told me, its not always about non stop goals, its the moves and attempts that lead to that one goal. You can come up with a win or get crushed in the final minutes haha

Felt bad for Japan

yeah its really about the momentum and tension ebbing and flowing

only sport i follow and have interest in. i think the tactics and strategy are really interesting

and also the story of everything with all the different leagues in different countries and international teams on top of it

plus way less commercials than american sports even tho they ramped that up with this world cup

Oh i definitely think bringing it to venues all across the US is probably the most i interesting thing about this whole event to me tbh.

The stories and "Great American Sleepover" social media stuff surrounding all the international visitors and the specific cities and regions they were in was highly entertaining.

I dont ever watch soccer but i watched a few matches of this World Cup. I didnt watch any of the last WC because of the egregious crimes surrounding it, i didn't even allow my husband to watch it in our house or on a streaming service connected to my bank accounts lol.

But i did watch a few this time. The best match that i saw by far was the Cabo Verde-Argentina one. Not only was that some of the most edge-of-my-seat soccer i've ever watched, but the fact that some tiny country, barely top 50 ranked team almost knocked out one of the favorites for the whole cup in the first round was just wild

Im going off the dome here so forgive me if you look into it later and some bits of my recap are off, but here's what i remember from the initial exposé published like a year or so before the WC started:

The Qatar olympic planners advertised construction jobs for their WC venues and spaces to legitimate migrant workers from other countries who had legitimate passports, papers, etc.

Then when the workers arrived, after several weeks a lot of them hadn't been paid for anything yet. When they confronted the planners about it, they were told to hand over all their travel documents and IDs (and according to some people's accounts, their cell phones) so their payment processing team could use them to verify and solve the issue. After some waiting they were told to go home and it would resolved the tomorrow. When they arrived the next day to follow up and get their stuff back, they were told that the planners — who are essentially private contractors for their government, especially after all the lobbying Qatar did to ensure they hosted — took all their documents from them so they could either withhold or destroy them, basically making it impossible for these people who dont speak the same language to be verified that they are who they say they are.

They were given a choice to either continue working on the construction at a severely decreased wage compared to what they originally promised, or leave and try their luck at crossing international borders without any papers saying who they are. It was basically either spend insane hours every day building a massive event space in unsafe heat, or become a de facto refugee multiple countries away from anyone who speaks your language/dialect.

There were a couple really great pieces that were trying to sound the alarm about it during the construction process. But the story didn't really have staying power until the WC started and every rose twitter account was replying to all World Cup posts calling it slave labor. And it was slave labor, but on social media people will just say that and then when asked for more info it's suddenly "not my job to educate you". (It could just be my low social media presence, but i rarely saw anyone arguing online about the topic and actually talk about what was happening.)
