This nigga Nip a Grammy nominated artist and went up against other nominees like Cardi and Pusha and them.

He was on XXL covers, had the Hov co-sign from the 100 dollar mixtape,

I heard of him through his collabs with artists like French Montana back in 2010 when French was on his run in NY,

I’m not saying he was the biggest rapper in the world but y’all niggas acting like he was super underground like XV or somebody is peak “I discovered rap in 2015” s***

I’ve been aware of Nipsey Hussle since the first time they introduced him on 106 & Park as a Snoop Dogg clone. I’d hear a few songs of his here and there over the years. But I didn’t seriously listen to his music until Victory Lap dropped. I listened to that album for a solid 4 months straight when it came out. Made me a fan, and went back to listen to his older projects.

I say all that to say even with all the accolades you listed, at the time of his death, he still was not a household name.

Don’t care about the joke but I’m more surprised how many ppl on here claiming they never knew him. IK he wasn’t huge but figured he was known in hip hop circles. He basically introduced Roddy Ricch to the world plus he used to cameo on some tv shows

Fr I don’t expect mainstream to know much about him but I thought a hip hop forum would be knowledgeable about a rapper from blog era

Plus even after his death it’s not like he has as big of a cult fan base as other artists who passed like the joke making it seem lol

As for the joke, Mac Miller is a bigger example of this than Nipsey tbh

Yeah he was more known but his popularity was dwindling and albums weren’t selling then he passed and people made him their whole personality
