Alba in Lazarro all those italian beauties

your top 3 directors of the decade?

    idk perhaps

    Alice Rohrwacher
    Bi Gan
    Alejandro Jodorowsky
    Miguel Gomes
    Nuri Bilge Ceylan
Christian Petzold (00s were stronger tho)
    Terrence Malick
Pedro Costa (would have definitely voted for Vitalina Varela but I just watched it recently and I didn't want to edit my list.)

she made only three feature films thus far so it's pretty easy I'd say. Corpo Celeste a moving Coming of Age drama. Relatively common debut but you can already see her directorial talent as well as beautiful cinematography. The Wonders is imo almost as good as Lazarro. It sort of fuses Olmi with Fellini. The portrayal of rural life is imo superior to Lazarro and while it lacks magical realism there are definitely moments that feel unreal. As for the story I think I would summarize it as a psychological drama focusing on power structures inside of a family living in poor conditions who try to achieve fame and fortune via a TV show. There is also the weird sense of comedy you have in Lazarro. She is currently working as a director in a TV show I haven't seen though.

I was getting large 50s Fellini vibes from the second half of Lazarro.... Reminded of Gelsomina and Cabirias shacks on the Italian wastelands

    @Aruji

Here's some recs for 2020 (per the request from the description on your LB list) in case I haven't already given you any:

The History of the Seattle Mariners (Jon Bois) — here's links to it separated in 6 parts, or the full 3.5 hour single video cut if you prefer that

    • "Movie That Invites Pausing" (Ken Jacobs) — Link

    • "Last Year in Dachau" (Mark Rappaport)

    • "Anna / Nana / Nana / Anna" (Mark Rappaport) — Link

    Da 5 Bloods (Spike Lee)

    • "France Against the Robots" (Jean-Marie Straub) — Link

Inventing the Future (Isiah Medina) — Link
