tbh i haven't really done more than skim the virgil stuff but i feel like people have been calling OW and virgil himself played out for a few years now. maybe getting the bag on the crest of a wave or at least close enough isn't the most terrible idea.

LMVH will always have more institutional power in that relationship but in the short to medium term it's a symbiotic one and one can only benefit from the other doing well. virgil diversifies his own portfolio with them and they capitalise on a streetwear wave that has some life in it yet. i totally get the points about ownership but tbh i think virgil having already moved through pyrex onto off white probably is less concerned about the 'off white' name than people might think

I think it's easy to "over a***yze"/rationalize, let's directly hit it: if Virgil's play from the jump was to get a bag, collect his over dues as a pioneer, by all means do you. Run it up, secure all the collabs, sign every deal it's fine. We all know those types.

He continues to screw up when he tries to position himself as a Black leader/voice. It's one thing when you feel outside pressure as a public facing Black figure, it's another when you're peddling lazy "I support black business," merch, branding African kentes with LV, incorporating Angela Davis, James Baldwin messaging into your productions etc., stealing from Black creatives etc.

Straight up Virgil's doing the opposite of opening doors. Once the white man catches up to his gimmick/moves on, it's gonna be 2x harder for a say Grace Wales Bonner type to get those keys down the line. That's where the frustration stems from imo. At least personally.

If by "efficient" you're referring to $$ I'd recommend stocking up on solid blanks (Uniqlo, wang, acne, etc), and build around a designer "statement" piece (sweater, jacket etc). That way you're not dropping $$ just to reset in 2 months ya dig?

Yeah I hear you, all very fair points. There is definitely something jarring between that presentation of him as such and as you say the cashing in to get a bag in the here and now. Maybe it plays out better overall than we're all assuming though.
