the genre wouldn't be nearly as big globally without it. but i think a lot of people in the us especially are quick to hate on it as a genre because it has a lot of different influences and represents a culture that a lot of people in the us have no experience with. you'll never see an american rave or dnb set. that being said whatever you want to call it boy in da corner gotta be one of the greatest uk albums of all time

hate seeing so many artists under the umbrella of grime but at least a lot of them are getting exposure now.

yeah i love a lot of artists in the UK rn, but there's really no big new artists doing grime in the last 2-3 years. The people holding down the sound in the UK mainstream are JME, Kano (on his grime songs), D Double E, Ghetts, Skepta, P Money, Wiley and now Dizzee again. There are some good new grime mcs like SBK (great producer too), but he has no mainstream attention.

People call artists like Stormzy and Dave grime but idk. Stormzy doesn't usually get involved in the culture like some of those other legends. The grime songs he does drop are good but ironically end up all being Wiley tributes or sampling him (Wiley flow, know me from, one take) and i can't see that happening again anytime soon lol

Idk why the uk music press is so clueless when it's genres like grime that's actually given the UK it's own sound and culture for 20 years. Without it we'd just be copying the US. I saw the guardian call lily allen's first album grime the other day, i can't tell if they're just trolling by this point. they put kano's picture up instead of wiley's too. disrespectful af

I think it's great to see a lot of young artists in the UK blowing up under the figurehead of grime if it means more people are willing to learn about the culture. Dave is a hard one because I think there's a lot of artists now from the UK who can easily fit across a multitude of genres, him included.

I haven't really heard a lot of recent projects that embody the grime sound. I think also with the emergence of drill into the mainstream a lot of UK media is just going to get even worse lool.

Stormzy is a straight pop artist now and it's tough to ever say he was grime more so just sat on the edge of it.

that's true about drill. they should cover the music and the social side of drill separately. a lot of these producers are making some of the most important and influential sounds in uk youth culture rn, whatever you think of the rappers. I like some drill rappers tho.

stormzy has a positive impact in the uk, but people ik who love uk mcs don't really play his music lol. so he's going for some different audience.

If you love grime then JME's Grime MC is one of the better albums oty imo. Kano's Hoodies All Summer last year was fire, it only has one real grime song on it but Kano always carries grime in his style to me. All of P Money's latest projects are good. Dizzee's dropping next month, the new BBK single is great, D Double x Kano just put out a new song that goes. There's a song on Wiley's album called Eskimo Dance which is the energy of a set in a 3 minute song. Everyone gets a different instrumental, the energy of it is crazy

It's weird how when young artists spit on grime they sound dated, but all of the legacy artist projects still sound fresh.

I heard the new BBK single it was pretty good, JME's album too. It's crazy how both the Adenugas have been staying consistently good for so long.

I skimmed the Kano project when it came out I'll have to go back, but Made in the Manor is one of the top 5 UK albums for me.

I think drill is good but I definitely don't listen to it consistently. I think the sound is definitely getting more attention than the actual content and lifestyle. It's cringe but I've noticed a lot more drill on apps like Tiktok. I'm not from the UK so I can't speak to it but I am just happy as long as people are willing to listen to what it's got to offer.

In terms of other genres I hope Hus is dropping soon cause he's got AOTY locked for me. or if Octavian drops before 2020 is over.

you not from the uk and supporting the music like that? i've got to salute to you are uk artists popular in your country?

the adenugas always amaze me. their other sibling produced the outro to Konnichiwa which is a great beat. He produced on Crime Riddim and Ladies Hit Squad too. their sister was one of the main beats 1 presenters too. their mum just put out a book, the talent level is crazy

I agree about Made in the Manor. Hoodies All Summer is pretty much just as good, lacks the big song that 3 wheel ups was in the uk but the whole album is great to me. the fact he got a gospel choir to sing suck your mum then made the song about empire, the uk government and racism. was an amazing flip fo that phrase, when it came on i thought it was going to be a fun song. Home Sweet Home lowkey a classic too. And Top Boy a classic show, Kano a goat.

J Hus is one of the best of this generation of uk artists. his albums have a great sound, they sound current but also have the feel of a lot of my favourite classic music from all genres.

Octavian will drop at some point. I like his songs with Future and Gorillaz rn.

I'm Canadian but I've been big into grime and UK culture for a while. I try to put other people on as much as possible, and it's good to finally see them willing to listen.

Trust me IK about Julie too, whole family is crazy. I'll definitely give the Kano album a spin.

Is our culture bigger in Canada? i remember JME saying Drake grew up listening to Shola Ama and boy in da corner. idk if that's true tho. Need Drake to just say f*** it and make a UK Garage and funky album lol, would work for him. It seems like he's way more tapped in with the history of the uk scene than other rappers from abroad who get involved. on the headie one song he did flows from all different uk genres, was impressive knowledge wise.

Yeah, Kano always coming through. :ejoice: His duds have highlights too, people should be bringing back his song Fightin the Nation in this current social situation

man i have weird opinions on drake cause I don't listen to any of his music but I can't deny he is seemingly knowledgable about the culture. I think he's a bit corny about it at times though

i remember tre mission going abroad and doing reasonably well but I can't think of any other artists that crossed over.

    this session legendary tho

What's your opinion on Canadian rap? ik some artists who are only really big in Canada but my knowledge isn't that deep. Why hasn't anyone been able to do what Drake did? i feel like being that Canadian outsider makes him more sympathetic to global non-us MCs, but i'm surprised him blowing up hasn't made Americans accept more Canadian rappers.

everyone sounds great on this freestyle, especially JME. he's underrated lyrically sometimes. songs like Understand and Punch in the Face are great lyrically and his new album is full of quotables

I know a couple good rappers in Toronto, but I think it's hard to get exposure when you're focused on getting big in your own city. Like a lot of focus isn't put into global exposure.

I also think majority of the people I've met have no real interest in finding Canadian artists when the US brings out so many. A lot of it could owe to the fact that we have no real history of hip hop in
Canada whereas every US city has a lot of deep roots.

    Street Dreams was terrible.

That's why they had to follow it up with More Street Dreams in a couple months to try to erase the stain it left.

Street Dreams is klassik. that's outrageous. It has into you.
Into you. That s*** was everywhere.

It had singles for females but he lost the streets with that one.
