Basically theaters can now be bought up by movie studios. This is going to majorly f*** over independent filmmakers and smaller studios. Prepare to see only s*** from Disney, Apple, Netflix, Warner Bros and perhaps one of these companies buying A24 and s*** in the near future.
unless i misunderstand there's a two year grace period at least
Yeah it means moreso it could be reversed in 2 years, but who knows what happens
I mean, The Theater is dead anyway lmao so this is essentially already the landscape for the most part

its dead because of covid, but theaters were booming in recent years

Yes, mostly because of the companies you named in OP. That’s what I’m saying. Disney Alone has probably saved the entire system from imploding. These companies are already the major players in this. I don’t think it’s going to affect some of the indie darlings as much as one might think because not that many were clamoring to the theater for them anyway

In terms of the heavy hitters sure but there are plenty of indie films from the past few years which made really big profits thanks to theaters. Getting rid of theaters is going to further contribute to the staleness we have been seeing in cinema.
While this is alarming news, I think the bigger worry is smaller theaters surviving COVID right now
