I don't think it was a setup. But I do think the robbers planned to hit the mansion. Robbers finding out Pop Smoke was there meant they could've hit a bigger lick so they proceeded with the extra s***, which unfortunately led to them shooting him. Could very well be a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time for Pop Smoke.

The thing about this whole thing that is still suspect is that Pop Smoke is the only one who ended up dead, but the woman seemingly got out of this completely unscathed.
