  • With A.I. becoming more prominent in filmmaking, I think it may be time to accept that it’s going to be used to an extent.

But how far should they go?

Before generative A.I., A.I. was just a tool just like anything else in any software. Generative A.I. has come along and made the use of any A.I. look flat out wrong, especially in art.

One mention of A.I. in certain spaces and people go mad, while there are others who think it’s the future of everything. However, I think, at least in film and TV production, it’s going to be somewhere in the middle. The unfortunate inevitability of generative A.I. use in big productions is already here, sometimes it’s really small, or entirely noticeable.

I think use of A.I. as an assisting tool is good in my book. Instead of rotoscoping footage, having A.I. scanning footage and rotoscoping it for you is massively beneficial and time saving. You are still doing the work and creating the backgrounds, you’re just saving time from having to go frame by frame.

I think generating entire backgrounds and especially using it to enhance a performance is crossing the line.

But what about using generative A.I. as inspiration? Could you have it say, generate an image of a building then the artist would use THAT image as inspiration to create something of their own? That’s where the waters muddy a bit for me.

Any completely 100% A.I. generated “content” is a big no from me. That s*** can get all the way the f*** out of here.

I feel like this rant/essay/thing didn’t fit in one thread so let’s all get our A.I. grievances out here I guess.

There were plenty of inexcusable uses of AI in film in 2024.

The Brutalist: Used generative AI to create drawings of buildings and used voice AI to modify Adrien Brody's voice for an accent he couldn't naturally do.
Emilia Perez: Used voice AI to enhance Karla Sofia Gascon's vocals in a range she couldn't naturally do.
Late Night with the Devil: Straight up generated AI images and put them right into the film.

I am 100% against any and all generative AI in art. I don't care what it's used for. I don't care if a human is the one writing the prompts, or using it for inspiration, or any of that. I'm fully against it no matter what.

I am against voice modification technology that artificially "enhances" actors' voices. I am absolutely against the grave robbing, necromancy technology that recreates the voices of dead people.

It's all evil, and it's going to ruin this medium.

100% agree with all of this.

Do you think when people mention A.I. in these conversations, that they should specify that they are talking about generative A.I.? Because again, for things such as rotoscoping or really anything that simplifies a post production process that is not generative, those things seem to get looped in.

Unless you’re against A.I. as a tool in general

Yes, generative AI is the issue. CGI and related visual effects practices that require human input, work, and creativity are not bad.

Consider that Adrien Brody is about to win the Oscar for Best Actor for a voice that isn't his

  • Ai or machine learning to help speed up basic workflow issues I’m okay with.

The generative s*** that harms the environment and takes other peoples art can kick rocks

  • Background actors will become more and more obsolete.

Using AI for any writing capacity is a big NO for me.

Now if you’re using AI to like cross reference your work? Say you have a joke in your script and you wanna find out if it’s been used before in another movie, I have no problem with AI searching for you and letting you know if it’s original or not.

im not saying it should be treated the same way as if it was actually his voice, just the actual use of it existing

    didnt know that also

(obviously its way different if its cases of resurrecting dead actors voices which we will inevitably be seeing more of unfortunately)

So because they added a filter (in which we don’t know how much) we just erasing his entire performance?

Well that’s where it gets muddy right? While yes, a Hungarian accent is difficult to master, it’s the time and effort of the actor that goes into mastering a language and accent.

It gives him a leg up in a sense that it’s a crutch. One the other nominees presumably didn’t have

Should we view it as an athlete using sports enhancements then?

I’m just not aware if the entire voice is AI or 95% is his voice with a 5% tweak.

I'm confused as to when perfectionism in accents became necessary in film
