I've always believed that sleep paralysis is the by-product of otherworldly entity's desires to steal our astral body away. Your body becomes paralyzed out of instinct, to stop your astral form from being stolen.

You're body becomes paralyzed, and you start to think that you're hearing ominous voices and seeing scary images... your body and mind do this in tandem to scare you from being bribed by the darkness, and eventually being stolen away.
