OnyxShine9I had a pet but it was too much responsibility so I gave him too a rescue a year ago. I’m still in contact with the rescue lady and occasionally pick him up for the weekend because I want to make sure he gets put in a good home but hot damn was that painful.

I agree, but I would like to add this option.
Be realistic about you and your idea of your future romantic partner, then dictate if the possibility is high to have that type of partner and are you capable to be with that person, and do they really like you
If the possibility is high, then go after it. If the possibility is rare, then steer clear and don't beat yourself up on it.
My thing is that I want a woman's emotional intimacy and kind nature, but it has to be only with someone I have high sexual attraction to.
Sadly, a lot of the women I'm really into that I have met thus far not interested and that's okay.
You just learn to let it go and be happy with you.
