Wadup yall so as you might remember I had a thread about this old rnb song that could've potentially inspired the main refrain for the hook of Andre 3000's Hey Ya! this is the thread in case you're wondering: ktt2.com/just-found-the-original-song-which-was-interpolated-for-the-hey-32536136

today I got another possible interpolation from an old 80s song that made its way to a popular track, and you just may not know it. let's talk about Kanye West: his smash single All Falls Down came out in 2004 and sampled this song by Lauryn Hill for the hook (4:40):

here's All Falls Down of course just so we're clear on which part I'm gonna talk about (0:06):

well anyways in the late 80s there was this rnb singer guy by the name of Sherrick. he had shown a lot of promise and had real singing chops, even though his career was short-lived due to an intense struggle with cocaine addiction which cut his career short with just one self-titled studio album released. he unfortunately died in 1999 of unknown causes.

so now that we have both Lauryn's and Ye's parts fresh in our memory, let's listen to one cut from Sherrick's self-titled album, Lady You Are (0:57):

and uhh, that's pretty much all that I got for ya. once again I wanna know your thoughts; is it too much of a reach, is it a cool coincidence, or a deliberate interpolation that was probably so minuscule in the moment that pretty much everyone involved may have forgotten where they got it from? I could see Lauryn listening to Sherrick at some point forever ago and then having this melody in her head kinda out of nowhere since then. but I don't know, and always wanna hear what you think!

not every similarity is an interpolation

  • Sep 2, 2023

It’s definitely possible and very similar, but it is a pretty short phrase and might not be entirely unique, I wouldn’t be surprised if that little melodic phrase is somewhere on some older soul s*** too. Nothing comes straight to mind but that little move of the lead vocalist leading into the big chorus just before the drop and landing on the one is a common move. Cool find though, could definitely be related

I hear what you’re saying but it’s such a short run that I wouldn’t be surprised if it was entirely coincidence.

There’s only so many notes you can move around within a scale. When you do a short phrase like that, you’re kinda bound to be repeating what someone else has done in the same/similar scale with the same syllables

Now that I think of it, I feel like the melody of “computer love” has a similar run too

I hear what OP is hearing he just put the time stamp too early

Mayyyybe the swing of the female bg box is similar to the acoustic guitar on AFD if I had to reach ?

Only thing that sounds the same is the melody where he sings "Lady You Are" that‘s it and these are just 4 notes

    This one’s way too similar

  • @op this thread and ur last one are both reaches when u say this one probably inspired that one. doesn't mean u don't have good points, I mean yes there's many similarities. But the truth is there's only so many melodies that work really well in any given harmonic/rhythmic context. I mean you've heard of The Lick, yk the one riff that has shown up in like a million jazz songs and even some pop songs. if you're listening to artists working within the same or similar genres, you shouldn't be too surprised when you come across the same line or melody twice. it certainly shouldn't be treated as evidence that one song copied the other, especially when it's this dubious.

basically, yes they're similar but it's not that deep chill

last post applies to this s*** too. im not telling u it isn't similar, I'm just telling u that melodies being similar doesn't rlly mean that much.
