Sauvage smells good. That is a fact.

The main problem is the fact that EVERYONE and their mother wears it, and because of that it's overhyped/over marketed/over pushed/overexposed.

540 is synthetic, most of them escentric molecules are synthetic. There are plenty other linear fragrances that get loved as well.

The frag community mostly hates Sauvage because it's popular. Same reason they didn't understand why Dior was revamping the Homme line.

I almost posted your first sentence word for word I think Sauvage smells great but I wear it for other people more than I wear it for my own enjoyment, if that makes sense

Popularity does count against it but there's tons of other complaints about the fragrance itself from the community. "Headache inducing", "loud and obnoxious", "basic shower gel", "douchey fratboy fragrance" etc. I do believe a lot of this is a response to the popularity, you'll always have people who want to go against the grain or people maybe expect something more unique based on all the hype

1 million gets a lot of hate because of its popularity but also because some people consider it a cloying bubblegum mess. Sauvage is in a similar spot imo, to everyone else you'll just smell good but people into fragrances will look down on you for wearing it. Not just because it's popular but because they hate the scent

Elixir will be the most loved by the community just because it's lesser known and more of a "niche" style offering even though it's still designer.

Covid really had my smell messed up. Layton finally smells good. I threw out my Rasasi and Jubilation because they smelled rotten like a moron. Layton smelled slightly rotten, finally get the burst of apple.
