Social media/cultural blending is definitely gonna lead to a version of this
Drum machines and synthesizers go against the idea of rock and country that was expected because they are a neatly futuristic. Remember that country used to be called country and Western because the genre basically LARP’d as tales from the old west. Rock had been perverted into representing white European history stretching as far back as the Vikings.
Black music has always been about innovation: that’s how we were able to go from doo-wop to funk/proto-disco in less than 20 years, new jack swing to Playboi Carti in less than 30 years.
Hip-hop was literally born from rapping that was done on disco records and the production of Dancehall records.
Both on some level reduce music to numbers. Both convos provide similar entertainment value. Similarly little substance and fiction
ranking discographies is based on your opinion of the music while bilboard is purely numbers. Its definitely not the same type of convo.
Hating on old s*** is on some level taking pride in being stupid even if the old heads are dumb
!!!
If funk, hiphop, and r&b music can be made with synths and be identifiable as what they are…wtf is the excuse for rock being unable to?
i get what youre saying but also this statement could be taken from 40 years ago (besides the genre specifics), and its not like there hasnt been a lot of rock music fused with other elements since then (in underground or even the mainstream)
in a way i feel like rock for the past 15 years has been at the stage that jazz reached in the mid 1970s. the genre has reached an age where its rooted in a kind of "traditionalism" (for lack of a better word) where its no longer having rapid expansion and larger zeitgeist within its bounds and anything significantly creative/out of the box will be proclaimed as either an impure form (fusion) or just in another genre entirely. and imo the traditional aspect isn't necessarily a bad thing that means there can be no creativity or masterpieces made within it,or that its "dead". you might say "why isn't there as much innovative rock anymore?" but also consider that the truly innovative rock will be called another word entirely, whether thats accurate or not. and I think this is just a result of labeling and genres in general and not some qualities inherent to rock (or jazz). an example of this is a bizarre split i have seen some people try to do where they split "indie" or even "alternative" from rock music as a whole, leaving plain ol "rock" to just be the form that looks back in time by definition
also kinda interesting that these periods in rock and jazz both occurred about 50-60 years after their crystallization as full fledged recorded genres but thats probably just a coincidence
i like genre labels as a tool to better describe music and help us find music we like, but one of the points they break down is where a genre becomes so old and developed that new developments are just cast aside as something else entirely. i wonder if any specific genre labels (not counting broad ones like "pop") really can have a shelf life of more than 50 years or so without becoming a relic of the past in a way. we'll see what happens with hip-hop in the 2030s-2040s, the digital music age might change some of this tbh
i've also always disagreed with the idea of a "dead" genre though, if one of the biggest songs from 2021 was a rock song then is rock really dead? is jazz dead since the 80s even though there are still lots of great creative jazz albums being released every year? are there only like 5 "alive" genres or what?
edit: also keep in mind im not exactly speaking as an expert on the last 45 years of jazz or anything like that, my observations might end up being surface level

U can take both convos threads n remove the literal rankings n find similar conversation. There is fake objectivity in both scenarios often
Man if Dälek came on the scene about 10 years later they could've found themselves a bigger audience
or maybe not
but Filthy Tongues, Absence, and Abandoned Language are so fire
Even after claiming to hate pitchfork the vast majority of users here especially the white ones think of rap like pitchfork did pre 2016. The kanye tweet most likely applies to u too
Crab is the most overrated food of all time.
You gotta spend all that money and do all that work for a little bit of meat.
At this the point wu tang is underrated and it's kind of a testament to how many ppl leeching off of hip hop
There's a pretty solid chance u don't know the definition of racism even after having taken a bunch liberal arts classes. Not that the "uneducated" are any less likely
There has never been a movie that has done superman justice and its kind of tragic considering how historically significant the character is.
