Gatekeepers genuinely want to protect something they care about.

Pretentious gatekeepers use elitism to put themselves on a higher level than those who are new to whatever they are trying to gatekeep.

The way I see it
Gatekeeping is protecting a niche or catered piece of media with loyal consumers, from outsiders who know nothing about it, demanding it to be more commercial friendly and immediately digestible for just anyone to get into and understand at first glance without any investment in the media or understanding the core things that make it special
Gatekeeping is often pretentious yes, but pretentious doesn't even have to be related to gatekeeping. Thats when you're an a****** to anyone outside of the fandom about said thing for no reason even if they're trying to invest in and understand it better.
