1/2 of the Avila Brothers, this man is a talent that has worked with the best of the best. Most notably, he is a frequent collaborator of Usher. Has also worked with Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson, Patti Labelle, and so many others. However, who is the visionary behind the contributions. Who is the man who provided the Latin R&B styled sensuous grooves for others? What is his story and his own flavor of brown eyed soul?
Repping from San Fernando, CA. Bobby came from a family of musicians and artists. His father had a history of performing in numerous bands dating back to the 60s and 70s. A young Bobby would often check to see his father's band practicing in their garage. Specifically, he gravitated toward the keyboards and realized that there was passion. His father realized his Bobby's talent and even told his former band that he was leaving to focus on his son's career. It took a lot of sacrificing but the results were positive. Bobby was able to secure a deal in 1987 with RCA Records. Which followed his debut eponymous album in 1989. The singer would continue with 3 other albums: My Destiny(1993), Que Pasa(1994), and Into My Life(1995).
Unfortunately, none of the albums charted. This lead to him transitioning into producing and writing songs for other artists. Teaming up with his brother, Iz Avila, to form the Avila Brothers. Becoming grammy award winning and in demand producers in their own right.
One of my favorite things about Avila is how he incorporates his Latino heritage in his music. Not only does he do Spanglish at certain points, but Latin musical traditions are felt throughout. Salsa and Merengue are definitely prevalent inspirations for Avila. His mid 90s output evolves who he is as an artist. Far from the typical Adolescent/Teen R&B stereotype, this man has been producing since he was 9 years old. Pretty impressive as it already sounds smooth and intricate by this point in time. Whether you hear the keyboards, bongos, and vocoders; this man knows how to keep his songs filled with rhythmic textures of vibrancies. This helps enrich the melodic ornamentation and rhythmic vitality of his work. Another noticeable aspect is his controlled vibrato which adds to his velvety, comforting voice. Another callback and tradition of classic Latino singers. Once again, proving that he meticulously blends Latino musical elements with the complexities of orchestral funk in the manner of Earth, Wind, & Fire: his musical heroes
Special shout out to all my Latino Americans in the state! Ya'll know how to seduce our ears and soul like no other
