With all the war and beef going on in the world, I felt maybe let's take a breather from all that. There has been so much chaos in culture right now that it became exhausting to post. The focus was all on those events, a huge monocultural moment. So, now that we've past the cultural pandemonium for now. It's time we can relax and go back to our regular programming. Enter a world that was lost to the sands of time. An artist that not only rewinds his soundscapes but pushed the boundaries of the genre he was in.
Repping from Casa Blanca, Moracco. Bob Fadoul early days goes back to the Late 60s - Early 70s where he temporarily lived in Paris. Already ingrained in Arabian musicality, he was introduced to the world of Western music. The sounds of Western funk and rock moved him. One artist in particular, James Brown, was a huge inspiration to Fadoul and pushed him to begin his passion. The man and his three-piece backing band (often known as The Privileges) became a well-known commodity in Moracco. Early on doing covers of James Brown cuts before transitioning into original material. The vigorous singer morphed his blood, sweat, and tears into his 3-decade spanning career before passing away in 1991.
Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of releases spread throughout his career. The good thing is that the releases are very indicative of his identity and soundscape. I would honestly say that Fadoul is a mix between James Brown and Ol Dirty B******. He has a harsh, atonal voice that aids the music he makes. Just like his musical hero, he knows how to improvise. In certain songs such as "Darham Gadder", the timing and vocal phrasing is just entertaining. Cause you would think it wouldn't work for how sonically absurd it is but it still sounds fresh and dope. I find myself cracking up hearing him spazz the f*** out in Arabic at times , but you know damn well he be livin it up
The soundscapes are another aspect that caught my attention. The drum breaks are inherently raw as hell. The gritty drums. The thrashing guitars. It's takes it's inspiration from the improv musicality of both funk and punk. However, it's still homophonic as typical of Arabic song structures. The one melody dominates as other musical components support it. He has even gone into the territories of Reggae and, you guessed it: Hip Hop. The manic experimental persists in each of his releases. And for an artist with few releases, it successfully executes Fadol's vision for music. In this case, a little imagination goes a long way.
Special shout out to all my Arabians and Arab-Americans. Much love to all ya'll for always striking iron when it's hot. Be safe out there!
