Anything that momma says, goes. The matriarchy has been a prevalent part of black culture. Mothers, grandmothers, and aunties have always made sure to keep the family intact. Most black artists will tell you that a mother figure is what kept them from going under. A supportive, nurturing role that has saved so many and uplifted those at a time of need. This ain't just an everyday hustle but a responsibility that isn't as easy. That energy of black feminity is unmatched and continues to be a presence in black culture. Unapologetic, Soulful, Powerful, and Loving. These qualities are everything that the woman in my life have shown and it signifies this artist very well.
Repping from Philadelphia. The powerful singer had her beginnings as a member of the Lash Records label. Not enough is known about her but she's often confused to being related to the Brockington Sisters and Julius Brockington. In reality, it's common last name found in that area. Anyways, she was active between the Late 60s - Early 70s. There hasn't been any mention of her since other than archives and retrospectives.
Now Alfreda's voice is all those qualities I mentioned from before. She's clearly of the Aretha Franklin school of singing but she does have her own style. Her vocals are filled with anguish and thunder. The voice of what I believe a valkyrie would sound. She yearns about a lover's effect(Your Love Has Got Me Chained and Bound) and loyalty (I'll Wait For You) but it feels more of a duality, lyrically speaking. It almost seem as if she's having a confidential with God. That's always been an observation with R&B singers present their songs but with her it feels ambiguous. It adds to the mystery of her career as we don't truly know if that was her intention or not? I guess we may never know.
Now, the organ and piano combination is straight from da church. The female choruses and backings are also of choir esque call & response. It feels as if a praise break is happening right between our eyes. However, the lush arrangements and pumping horns are a mix between classic Philly Soul and ol skool Stax. An insane merger that although is short is shockingly able to marry the three styles. This assimilation allows her to command the mic with authority and perseverance. A few of these songs have a Philly Soul/Proto-Disco that makes it even danceable. It's a shame that she didn't continue or transfer with a bigger name such as Philadelphia International or TSOP. A voice could do wonders on a classic Philly Soul orchestral arrangement.
Special shout out to all the mothers who have raised and molded us into becoming the people that we are today Hope everybody had a great Mother's Day. Much love!
