I watched Dr Umars interview in the Breakfast Club and he said that Eminem couldn’t be the GOAT because he isn’t black and its not his culture. He continued this by saying that someone outside of the culture shouldn’t have a say in it, ie non african-americans.

Do y’all agree with this? There has always been talk about the importance of gatekeepers in hiphop, should it only be african-americans? This may be a controversial subject but I am genuienly interested in this discussion.

The consumers of hiphop is mainly white people and its ”their” money that helped skyrocket Hiphop to where it is today. To me, it seems a bit contradictory to ignore that and look down on non african-americans in the culture. But I understand that I may be wrong.

if anything eminem is too hip hop his music wouldn't be the way it is now if he listened to some singing mfs every once in a while instead of ll cool j and melle mel

Eminem can’t be the GOAT because of his lineage (MGK, NF, ian, etc)

I don’t think it should be gatekept by race, because while it was invented by black people, it has an ethos that can be understood and embodied by non black people as well.
That being said, I do sometimes get uncomfortable with how some people talk about rappers, and those people are sometimes white.

I agree with you on this. I understand the argument of only black people being the gatekeepers because its their culture and therefore they’ll ”look out for it” more. But thats not always the case. Humans are humans and will more often than not act selfishly

  • Honestly it’s facts especially someone with a racist past, he hasn’t produced a classic in over 20 years but he still get put on a throne meanwhile most black rappers get called out when they release a some what mid album but all and all he’s moving off the color of his skin his trash ass white fans don’t even respect. Hiphop just him

Which legends f*** with eminem? Haven’t heard a single legend put him in their top 5, even snoop said he’s not top 5

  • Jul 11, 2024

Eminem cant be the goat because his discography is not as strong as others and he plateaued for too long a period of time. but I wouldn't exclude him from a general top 10, that would be disingenuous

    I don't think it's a white/black thing cause there's genuinely a lot of people who respect Em.

He did put out like 4 albums of doo doo butter so he might not be in the goat convo right now.

amazing three album run plus work he did with dre and 50. snoop is coasting off of doggystyle when it comes to having good albums most of his are forgettable with a few great songs in there

rap is a product of black culture and its large amount of white consumers have only hurt the genre

  • Jul 11, 2024

Of course, Em don't even make his enough music to be the goat anyway

  • Jul 11, 2024

Dr Umar is a clown I couldn’t imagine taking anything he says seriously. You can’t tell the story of hip hop without Eminem point blank period. In his prime he was one of the best we’ve ever seen, highly influential and immensely popular
