It's existed a bit before but ever since the popularity of Kingdom Come Deliverance I've been noticing it - but KCD is obviously realistic and not fantasy

RPG, ARPG and CRPGS - even some multiplayer titles now

Where you can't do magic but it's still a fantasy and other things or people can do magic and/or it exists in the world to some degree still

There's like half a dozen of them I've came across since KCD2 happened, like for example the recent is that indie RPG "skyrim-like" game based off of Lord of the Rings that was revealed recently - you make alchemy grenade-like potions that do element damage when thrown but that's as far as "magic" you personally get, or like Rise of the Ronin - WHACK ASL, and before KCD it was limited to mostly very niche CRPGs for the most part and it was whack then as well but at least it wasnt a trend and wasn't affecting the wider space of RPGs. One crpg that did it like a decade ago (I forget its name) the only "magic" for yourself was to enchant your weapons with magic charged runes that give them elemental damage and visual effect, but there's dragons and revenants and s*** in the world that do all types of s***

Now I don't need Baldurs Gate or Final Fantasy or Elder Scrolls level of magic, it can be medium like Dark Souls or Elden Ring or Nioh, or low level limited magic and fantasy like Witcher and Bloodborne, or I'll even take very rare like in Monster Hunter - but to have it not at all for use while still being some sort of fantasy world to whatever degree is trash

Personally I’m sick of dark fantasy as a whole. S*** is generic at this point

Me personally I’m sick of fantasy games that don’t include a sub-human enemy race I can direct all my inner prejudice towards. At least KCD had the Cumans (joking)

kcd would be actually good if it was a fantasy game not a super serious game which made it super mid
